Welcome to TTT — Travel Tips & Tchotchkes, a curated corner of The Magic Mesa where travel wisdom meets practical magic.
These are the tools, gadgets, books, and little things we’ve picked up along the way—some useful, some joyful, all tested in real life (airports, kitchens, road trips, and chaotic packing moments included).
This is not a random impulse-buy list.
If it’s listed here, it earned its passport stamp.
TRAVEL TIPS
If you get a little (or a lot) of travel anxiety, you’re not alone. Whether you’re a minimalist packer or a “just in case” enthusiast, we all have that small set of items we keep close—on the plane, under the seat, on a bus, a train, or even while camping. These are the things that make the journey smoother, calmer, and far more enjoyable.
For years, I refused to travel with a pillow. Even a neck pillow. I told myself I should embrace the journey and not crave comfort.
That was when I was younger… and fearless.
(Still fearless. Just more cautious. And wiser.)
The Pillow I Swore I’d Never Bring
Now? I travel with a neck pillow that has a hoodie. Yes, a hoodie. So I can hide while my “sleeping-on-a-plane” face restores its beauty. You’re welcome, fellow passengers.
I usually travel with little to no makeup because—let’s be honest—it doesn’t survive long flights well. But I always pack a small makeup pouch in my carry-on for a quick refresh after landing. Arrival glow > departure glam.
Compression Socks = Happy Feet
If I’m sitting for long hours, compression socks are non-negotiable. They keep my feet happy, which means I can actually walk and explore right after arriving instead of elevating my legs like I used to. Game changer.
Entertainment Is Survival
Yes, I watch movies. But I also love reading, and ebooks save serious backpack space. My Kindle Scribe pulls double duty: reading and note-taking. I write blog drafts while traveling to my next destination, which still feels a little magical.
A solid pair of noise-canceling headphones is crucial. I know some people love chatting with seatmates, but sometimes you just need good music, a podcast, or pure silence. Boundaries, but make them cozy. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with bringing two pairs—because sometimes you need backup, and sometimes you need to visibly signal that you are in your zone. 🎧
And let’s talk power: a reliable power bank always comes with me. Some airplane outlets are… optimistic at best. My pants generate more static energy than some of those plugs.
Cold Planes, Hot Flashes, and Real Life
Planes are cold. Perimenopause is wild. My body temperature fluctuates more than my bank account. So I bring a light jacket that won’t make me sweat but keeps me warm when the cabin turns into an icebox.
Always pack a pen. Yes, paper forms still exist in some countries. And there’s nothing worse than being the pen-less passenger giving apologetic puppy eyes to a very sleepy neighbor.
Germs Are Real (So Are Wipes)
Disinfectant wipes? Absolutely. No explanation needed.
End-of-flight allergies are also very real. Runny nose, dry air, zero control. Bring tissues, drink water, and maybe skip that third coffee unless you want to be best friends with the airplane bathroom.
Traveling With Teens = Preparedness
I travel with teenagers, so Dramamine is always in my bag. Otherwise, I get a grumpy, nauseous teen—and if you know, you know.
Hydration & Freshness FTW
An empty, leak-proof water bottle is a must. Fill it after security and thank yourself later.
After long travel days, all I want is a shower—but sometimes there’s no time. That’s why I pack refreshing body wipes (and face wipes). Instant reset.
Eye drops are another essential. Dry air = scratchy, red eyes, and we’re not arriving like that. You have places to conquer and photos to take.
These are my must-have travel items—the ones that have survived flights, road trips, trains, buses, and camping adventures.
